Talia Liddle, a proud Arrente/Luritja women, is about to embark on a journey along Larapinta (Finke River) to gain a greater understanding of the significance of the river both culturally and ecologically. Larapinta is over 750 kilometres long, spanning from Alice Springs to the Simpson Desert. Talia begins her journey at Glenn Helen, where she's introduced to Larapinta by Hilda Inkamala and local Elder, Uncle Carl Inkamala. Paleontologist Dr Adam Yates paints a picture of the land in prehistoric times.

Aboriginal woman Manganinnie survives a Black Line raid which claims the life of her husband, Meenopeekameena. During an innocent family outing in the wilderness, Waterman's young daughter Joanna becomes separated from her family leaving Manganinnie, who has been hiding in the area, to take Joanna into her care. Overcoming her initial mistrust of Manganinnie, Joanna joins her on a long journey in search of Manganinnie's people.
