On June 22, 1941, Hitler invaded the Soviet Union. His goal: to deprive Great Britain in Europe and gain 'lebensraum' (habitat) in the east. "This is an entirely new kind of war, with unprecedentedly brutal rules," says historian Moshe Zimmermann when talking about the campaign in the east, which goes hand in hand with the escalation of Germany's Jewish policy.
