Engineering Reborn
Seoullo 7017 was one of numerous highway overpasses built of reinforced concrete in the 1960s. Stretching over 1km, the bridge came to symbolise the polluted heart of an overpopulated city. Step forward, Dutch architects MVRDV took this crumbling liability and turned it into an elevated green park. By re-engineering this lifeless bridge, they have turned it into an organic wonderland, home to 24,000 indigenous species of plants. For Seoul, it is a blueprint for the future, as the garden bridge continues to be added to.
