A man is found dead in a church, lying face down in a box full of poisonous snakes. The victim is Aaron Matthews, the church's assistant minister, and Carlos finds that he was poisoned before being left to the snakes. The snakes belong to the church; the members of the congregation handle them, and drink strychnine, to prove their faith. The poison that killed Aaron wasn't strychnine, however, and when Jim is bitten in the course of his investigation, he finds that the snakes have no venom.
