The Crown Under Attack
In the 1970s, Britain was in the throes of an economic catastrophe and massive social strife. The Queen would need to prove herself as a steadfast leader. When her uncle, the Duke of Windsor, died in 1972, she fought to reconcile her divided family. His abdication in 1936 had forced her fragile father, George VI, to take on the heavy burden of kingship, a responsibility which the Queen Mother blamed for his early death. At the Duke's funeral the Queen was generous to his widow, Wallis, and even persuaded the Queen Mother to join her at the graveside, as an act of reconciliation.
