Terry Malloy, an ex-prize fighter turned New Jersey longshoreman, struggles to stand up to his corrupt union bosses, including his older brother, Charley. After luring a fellow dockworker and friend to his death to keep him from testifying against labour boss Johnny Friendly, the appeals of the dead man's sister and a crusading priest awaken Terry's guilty conscience.
