After a two-month fight, the emperor Napoleon III has been defeated by Prussia. The Germans are only 250 kilometres from Paris. Convinced that this failure is God's punishment, a group of ardent Catholics makes a promise to each other- should the capital be spared, they would build a gigantic basilica dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
