The World from Above
This journey begins at Brodsworth Hall, one of the most complete surviving examples of a Victorian country house. To the south is an area known as the Dukeries, where four immensely rich dukes in the 19th-century had vast estates that bordered each other. In the 1590s the very wealthy Countess of Shrewsbury built Hardwick Hall, one of the most magnificent houses of the Tudor Age. At Southwell, we look at the cathedral, which was begun in the 11th century and is an outstanding achievement of simple Romanesque design.

The World from Above
This journey begins at the Moehne Reservoir and Dam, which played an important part in a famous WWII bombing raid. At the key industrial city of Duisburg, the River Ruhr flows into the River Rhine, whose course we will follow south for the rest of this journey. Close to the river at Cologne is one of Europe's finest cathedrals, which can be seen from almost everywhere in the city. Continuing up the Rhine we explore the majestic Rhine Gorge, which boasts 40 castles, including the fairy-tale Stolzenfels Castle, a superb example of 19th-century Prussian Rhine Romanticism.
