Inside the World's Toughest Prisons
Zenica prison is the biggest and toughest prison in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Built in 1886, it has survived all kinds of internal and external threats: rebellions, escape attempts, both world wars and the Bosnian war in the 1990s. Zenica has room for almost a thousand inmates. From minor offences, such as robbery, to war criminals, there are currently 550 prisoners behind bars. They are to be resocialised in three groups and reintegrated into society.
