With more and more diverse filmmakers behind the camera, this era saw women, Indigenous creatives, and gay activists using film as a powerful medium for social change, while the emergence of SBS fostered more authentic migrant storytelling. By the end of the decade the earlier monolithic portrayal of Australia had given way to a broader spectrum of the nation's stories.
